Meredith Land may be a familiar face in your household, though you’ve probably never met her. The 33-year-old television newscaster not only anchors the 10PM weekday news on NBC 5, she also performs the job of full-fledged reporter for the station. Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Land moved to Texas in 2003 and currently lives in Dallas with her husband, Alexander, and their 2-year-old daughter, McCall. Even though she’s got a hectic work schedule, we were lucky enough to conduct our own interview with this award-winning investigative journalist.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A REPORTER?
Just after college, I was interning at the NBC station in Charleston, South Carolina, when a category-5 hurricane was looming. When half the staff evacuated, I offered to stay and cover traffic. The news director offered me a reporter position and ten years later, I’m still doing this!

HOW DO YOU JUGGLE WORK AND MOTHERHOOD?
This is the one-million-dollar question. I am learning to let go of the guilt when I walk out of the house every day for work. I always call home five minutes later and [McCall] has completely moved on! I do the late news during the week, which puts me in bed at midnight. Her Dad does bath and bedtime. Luckily, McCall sleeps until about 7:30 or 8 each morning, which gives me much-needed sleep.

WHAT’S YOUR MOTHERHOOD PHILOSOPHY?
I am working on being completely present with McCall. Put down the phone, silence the Blackberry and just spend time with her. Oh, and I don’t Google or WebMD every hiccup!

WHAT MEMORABLE PIECE OF PARENTING ADVICE HAVE YOU RECEIVED?
“If she’s screaming, she’s breathing.”
Ha! My aunt told me that after many sleepless nights in the beginning.

YOU NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT …
Wipes, a diaper, Chapstick and a pair of flats

WHAT WAS THE MOST USEFUL BABY SHOWER GIFT YOU RECEIVED?
A trunk full of hand-me-downs from my aunt Robyn who has twin 5-year-old girls. She continues to save me so much money!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST SPLURGE ON YOUR DAUGHTER?
Probably this fancy day gown I bought her when she was 3 months old. It lasted 3 beautiful seconds before she spit up all over it. Lesson learned! McCall wears mostly hand-me-downs, but sometimes I splurge on something at Jacadi, too.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VACATION SPOT?
Figure Eight Island, NC. My family goes every summer to the beach. I live for those weeks.

WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE GIFT YOU’VE RECEIVED?
A friend from Charleston gave me an antique christening gown when McCall was born. It is over 100 years old and is so special to me.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ROOM AT HOME?
McCall’s room, by far. The walls are Benjamin Moore’s Queen Anne pink, which is the most delightful, calming color—the color of McCall’s cheeks!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PIECES OF JEWELRY?
When I graduated from high school, my Mom gave me a necklace that my Dad gave to her when I was born. I have vivid memories of that gold bar necklace around her neck. Also, my Dad gave me a vintage watch when I got married that is very sentimental.

ANY FUN FAMILY TRADITIONS?
I come from a family of girls, and we love to eat. All of our traditions center around food. Shrimp curry, raw oysters and fudge are favorites!

ANY GUILTY PLEASURES?
Freshly squeezed margaritas with Agave nectar … after my girl is in bed!

ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH ANY CHARITIES?
Salvation Army Angel Tree program, Ronald McDonald House

WHO IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION?
Lisa Ling. She is a modern journalist who is true to herself.

WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING INTERVIEW YOU’VE DONE?
Neiman Marcus CEO Karen Katz. She is a high-powered, professional woman who puts her son first.

WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO INTERVIEW?
Kate Middleton.

IF YOU WEREN’T A NEWS ANCHOR, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?
A travel writer

WHAT’S THE LAST THING ON YOUR MIND WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP AT NIGHT?
My mind is usually still stirring from the newscast. Most nights I am telling myself, “Go to sleep. Don’t open the computer. Don’t turn on the TV.” If I do, I am exhausted the next day.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
McCall will be twelve. I wish I could hit pause. I love [age] two. For her, I just want her to feel good about herself, always. As for me, I’ll be lucky to be doing what I’m doing, still reporting the news.
